Jeep Wagoneer vs. Grand Wagoneer: How “Grand” Are the Differences?

The Jeep Wagoneer and Jeep Grand Wagoneer were recently reintroduced to the market after a hiatus for the “Wagoneer” name. While both vehicles have been a success for the American auto manufacturer, there is some consumer confusion about their differences.  But Jeep has already shown that two similarly-named vehicles can thrive under a single brand name: the Jeep Cherokee and Jeep Grand Cherokee have been coexisting for many years. But the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer have the added challenge of being new to the market. To help consumers better understand the differences between these two SUVs, we’ve broken down some of the key distinguishing features here.

New Jeep Grand Wagoneer Features

First and foremost, we should clear up the biggest source of confusion about these two vehicles. The Jeep Grand Wagoneer and the Wagoneer are not two versions of the same car. Since being introduced, many consumers have confused the Grand Wagoneer for a higher trim level of the baseline Wagoneer model. But according to Jeep’s marketing, these are distinct vehicles, each occupying a different space in the market.

The Grand Wagoneer is a luxury full-size SUV model. In comparison to the Wagoneer, Grand Wagoneer is loaded with more advanced features, both standard and optional. The Grand Wagoneer also has stronger powertrains available than the Wagoneer.

There are four trim levels available on the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer: Series I, II, III, and the Obsidian trim. Each comes standard with a 471-horsepower 3.6L V8 engine. The Grand Wagoneer also comes standard with four-wheel drive, as opposed to rear-wheel drive.

Of course, there are also some other key distinctions between these two vehicles. The most obvious difference, once you’re inside the Grand Wagoneer, is its spectacular touchscreen display system. Based on which option you choose, the Grand Wagoneer can feature up to 75-inches of display space in the front of the cabin. Rear seat entertainment screens are also available at higher trim levels. Other high-end features, such as walnut interior trim and suede-wrapped seat headliners, help create a luxurious atmosphere inside the Jeep Grand Wagoneer.

New Jeep Wagoneer Features

Whereas the Jeep Grand Wagoneer belongs to the premium, or luxury, end of the market, the all-new Jeep Wagoneer is its mainstream counterpart. The Wagoneer may be missing some of the high-end features that the Grand Wagoneer offers, but it comes with a more affordable price tag and does not leave much to be desired.

The mass market Wagoneer comes standard with a 5.7L V8 engine, which gets up to 392 horsepower. While that comes in a bit below the Grand Wagoneer, it still offers a satisfactory driving experience. The Wagoneer can seat up to eight passengers, which is one more than the seven-seat capacity of the Grand Wagoneer. Wagoneer drivers currently have three trim levels to choose from as of 2022:  Series I, II, and III.

Despite being marketed as the mainstream model, drivers who choose the Wagoneer still have access to some excellent features. Wireless connectivity helps you connect your devices with ease, and wireless charging keeps those devices running on long trips. A 10.1-inch touchscreen display also gives you easy access to all your entertainment and informational needs.
